You will step into the shoes of a person who lived in 1913 and will speak and write in his or her voice, even if you vehemently disagree with everything that person says or does. They still asked me to pare it down and give them a discrete list of "what they really need to know" before exams. The approach is different, and this text spends the initial several chapters introducing the topic of Microbiology in a survey type fashion. This book is a free and open resource to composition instructors and students, full of essays that could supplement OER rhetoric and writing texts that lacked readings. This is definitely a strength of the text. 6. Considering that it was initially published in 2016 after CRISPR was discovered and the web version was updated in 2021, this is an extreme oversite for the relevance and longevity. The goal was to provide a high-quality, usable, accessible, and low-cost textbook for the hundreds of students who take COMM 1110 at Dalton State College every year. This book is a valuable resource for students and scientists in the fields of conservation and ecology interested in learning how to get started in applying remote sensing in ecological research and conservation planning. The glossary is clear and concise, In my review no significant inaccuracies where found in this textbook. 2 comments Most recent by Metz December 2011 GVCS Technical Development. read more. Overall, very good. This open textbook was created through a Round Six ALG Textbook Transformation Grant. The content will not become outdated quickly. The text is organized in such a way that future revisions will be easy to implement so that it should not ever be out of date. Momentum Behind The Movement Reviewed by James Herrick, Associate Professor, James Madison University on 2/1/18, The text covers all the standard, indispensable topics of microbiology, plus others that are often found in Allied Health Micro texts, such as infections of the skin & eye, respiratory system, etc. Both classes had approximately 130 students with similar backgrounds and preparation. Relevant terms are highlighted in the summary. The text provides comprehensive coverage of foundational research and core biology concepts through an evolutionary lens. Every topic, and issues within that topic, is covered. Can be useful for both graduate and undergraduate students. The breadth of topics covered would be good for a range of at least undergraduate-level micro courses. I feared it wouldn't have continuity -- that it might read like a patchwork written by a variety of authors, but it is organized in the same way for each chapter which provides clarity and structure. OpenStax textbooks undergo a rigorous peer review process. It can be reused, remixed, and reedited freely without seeking permission. I do think the book would benefit from a dedicated chapter on microbial ecology and/or environmental microbiology. That said, this textbook is less comprehensive than standard oceanography textbooks. The text is broken down into small sections that can be assigned individually or together as units. Within the pdf document, the text is divided well and it would be easy to assign specific sections. This is a great general microbiology textbook! I asked my students about this text compared to other textbooks they've used in biology and chemistry courses for majors and they overwhelmingly felt it was the easiest to read book compared to physiology, genetics, organic, and biochemistry. As mentioned above, bolding terms followed by explanations provides context for technical terms, and also would do the same for microbiology jargon. read more. Reviewed by Anna Amici, Affiliate Faculty Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department, Metropolitan State University of Denver on 2/5/20, The book is very comprehensive on the material that it does cover, but its scope seems to be limited to physical oceanography. The textbook covers all necessary topics for a first semester survey into General Microbiology. All Open Source Ecology content on this website is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. The topics are presented in a logical style holistically and within chapters. Figure legends could also include more detail to aid in student understanding. Overall the topics are mostly presented in a logical order. Accessible files with optical character recognition (OCR) and auto-tagging provided by the Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation. The book is missing several key words in the metabolism section, like lithotroph, chemotroph, and autotroph. The book is very comprehensive on the material that it does cover, but its scope seems to be limited to physical oceanography. The text used current and up to date information. The middle chapters that are not focused on what makes a microbe or on human health are the chapters I would like to see increase in detail and depth. Sections on plate tectonic processes rely on information not covered in previous chapters. It avoids the overuse of jargon but also uses an explains key terms necessary for understanding microbiology and disease. In some cases individual sections appear to be of the correct length, but in other parts of the book sections seem to short to fully cover the material. Each unit contain relevant "breaks" in content to give the student to apply the content through case studies, links to learning and disease profiles. In place of the glossary, the author(s) bolded words in the chapters, and then gave an explanation of each word. texts. I mentioned earlier in the review how I appreciated the collaboration with the ASM curriculum guidelines. As a group of organisms that are too small to see and best known for being agents of disease and death, microbes are not always appreciated for the numerous supportive and positive contributions they make to the living world. There were summaries at the end of each chapter that also partially-substituted for glossaries. The book is easy to navigate and the embedded videos are especially helpful. Modularity is one of the areas of strength of the book. Answers to the end of chapter questions were correct for the ones I looked at. The glossary is clear and concise. The terminology and format of the text is consistent-- I particularly like how the learning objectives and review questions bookend each chapter. This Lab Manual and set of tutorial videos, pre-lab worksheets, and lab datasheets for Circuits I were created under a Round 19 Affordable Materials Grant. I think some more effort to include stories and examples from different cultures and a wider variety of countries for the clinical examples or historical stories from scientists would be useful and appropriate, but I did not notice any glaring issues. Exploring Public Speaking: The Free College Public Speaking Textbook began as the brainchild of Dr. Kris Barton, Chair of the Department of Communication at Dalton State College. Included in this collection are accessible copies of the following open textbooks: This open textbook was the result of a remix of pre-existing open materials collected and reviewed by Molly Zhou and David Brown. For later chapters, one is forced to scroll down to get to the appropriate spot in the navigation toolbar. The first observance of this text book was that it is an easy read. This covers the basics of microbiology, starting with a brief history of microbiology and the impact microbes have had on humans. The topics are organized clearly, and I would perhaps rearrange topics to better suit my courses. I suggest expanding the text by a couple of chapters, adding the topics of natural and medical defenses against infections and how the body responds to infections, and how medicine (particularly anti-microbials and vaccines) helps. Wiki Issues Video Overview Documentation Instruction PDF Both of these issues can be addressed by the instructor, possibly by supplementing the text with both additional and higher quality figures. Introduction to Physical Oceanography by Robert H. Stewart (2008): Texas A&M University This textbook covers physical-oceanographic processes, theories, data, and measurements, targeted at upper-division undergraduates and graduate students in oceanography, meteorology, and ocean engineering. There was no issues encounter during my review of this text. I did not discern any grammatical errors in the text. There is a small section on the impacts of climate change on the oceans, but it could be much more comprehensive. There are twenty-six chapters or units with five appendices. With this text book it would be necessary to spend time providing additional content to increase the depth. The flow to this text is well organized. I would however admit there was a particular preponderance upon Africa and/or poorer countries in global health impact examples, thus would suggest the inclusion of a more varied coverage in regards to socioeconomic representation in global examples to not negatively frame a particular geographical region. The text is reasonably comprehensive. The only issue I found was that pagination online vs in the pdf vs in the printed text (which I purchased as a desk copy) did not always match. An open access literature textbook cannot be a history book at the same time, but history is the great companion of literature: The more history students know, the easier it is for them to interpret literature. I had no issues with the accuracy of the textbook. The sections on biochemistry, cell structure and function, and the fundamentals of physics and chemistry provide the basics for those who haven't had a prior biology course. The literature in this anthology is foundational, in the sense that these works influenced the authors who followed them. I did not come across any grammatical errors. The textbook covers many of the major areas of study in oceanography, but is noticeably lacking in discussions of most of marine biology, oceanic communities and ecological relationships in the oceans. It is a very clear, easy to understand text. Sections of the text could easily be assigned as reading materials to students. This text provides all of the basic foundational knowledge an introductory microbiology student should know. The text remains unbiased even in the Eye on Ethics sections where it would be easy to push the scientific perspective over the non-scientific beliefs about issues such as vaccination. The text takes a global perspective especially on infectious diseases but does so in a manner than is not offensive or derogatory. This textbook is an Open Access Resource. You will try to make sense of this terrible crime, debating what justice might look like for Mary Phagan, Leo Frank and the larger Atlanta community.". In the first chapter, however, the concept of active and passive continental margins is introduced, but plate tectonics is covered later. There were enough questions at the end of the chapters to allow review and studying without being overwhelmed or missing coverage. I do appreciate the inclusion of female scientists within some of the historical context of microbial discovery (ie: Lynn Margulis in 3.2). All modules cover the topics thoroughly and could be reorganized an easily used for an online course or even blended class. In January 2018, a colleague, Matthew LeHew, and I won a grant from the University System to create the ancillaries and improve the format for more accessibility. I also feel that relevance in topic choices for the case studies and review questions in each unit is important, and the text represented itself well here. The figures included with the text are not of the same quality one finds in commercial texts and are more sparingly present throughout the text. "Botany in Hawaii" discusses introductory topics of Botany through examples of the native and introduced plants found in Hawaii. The content is presented accurately, inclusive of proper citing and footnotes at the end of each section. It would be fairly easy to customize teaching from different sections of the text to meet the specific needs of my students. Illustrative examples are generally of greatest relevance to residents of the United States. As we push forward into the future of medicine and environmental health, it is imperative that we learn from each other, from history, and keep up to date with the latest advances in research and technology. As noted, there is little marine ecology included, nor is there in depth coverage of many human-environment topics, such as marine pollution, ocean resources, hazards, etc. The technical language used is well-explained and a glossary is provided. The text is well-written, and should hold most students' interest. The textbook is comprehensive an covers all concepts of microbiology clearly. Its largest shortcoming is the lack of industrial and ecological microbiology applications. La mayor librera especializada de Mlaga. Terminology is consistent and discipline-appropriate with frequent repetition that aids effective learning. I like the clear learning objectives for each chapter, would like to see a bit more emphasis here on getting past the lower level thinking skills (remember, understand) to higher level goals (analyze, discuss, etc), Reviewed by Cornelia Winguth, Assistant Professor of Instruction, University of Texas at Arlington on 3/5/20, The book covers all the topics that are important for an introductory oceanography course. The text is mostly an adaptation of two other excellent open- source calculus textbooks: Active Calculus by Dr. Matt Boelkins of Grand Valley State University and Drs. All information are correct. It can be used by undergraduates and graduate students alike. The text does not jump around in an attempt to integrate the different subject matters. The issue with this is finding a source for better quality and additional figures? Although there is a glossary, a mini-glossary at the end of each chapter would increase ease of access to students. "Technology for ecology." Technology and permaculture working together. As a result there were some minor inconsistencies. This textbook authored by Nina Parker et al.
